Bring your own plastic bag

I have been in Shanghai since Nov 16, 2008. What I noticed just recently is that whenever you shop, the store will charge you for plastic bag you use. The price is around RMB 0.30-0.50.

Just now, I went to bakery store, the cashier asked me (although I did't understand the language, but she pointed at plastic bag) if I need a bag.

Yesterday, when I went to Super Brand Mall downtown Shanghai, I saw many people carried their own plastic bag. When I shopped at Watson, they charged me RMB 0.50.

Next time, I better carry my plastic bag. Save the environment, save money too, hahaha....

The site also has travel guides for major U.S. and international cities and “accidental tourist” tips—sightseeing ideas for anyone who finds themselves with extra time in a new place.

Future expansion is already in the works—look for new site features, green programs and additional content in the upcoming months.

Green Architecture - Boring or Beautiful?

One Asheville, NC architectural design firm is changing the mindset of a generation.

Asheville, NC (PRWEB) October 2, 2008 -- There has been a disconnect between beauty and green in the minds of many. That is, there was a belief that if an architectural element was green and environmentally friendly, it was also lackluster in the looks department.

Today, Carlton Architecture is changing the public perception that green means less than beautiful. Yes, green architecture can be beautiful architecture. It can be modern and cutting edge, as well as sustainable and friendly to Earth.

It's in this vein that Carlton Architecture operates. The firm works with design principles that are rooted in environmental awareness.

"Green" has become one of the most popular buzz words of the day, but green is so much more than a buzz word when it comes to designing custom homes that are green in every way. Carlton Architecture is raising the bar in green architecture. Every home that they design is a completely "green" home - not only the building's interior and exterior, but the home is designed to be in complete harmony with its natural surroundings.

Although most of us think about our cars when we consider our contributions to global warming, we often forget about our homes and other buildings. But according to the Energy Information Administration of the U.S. Government, buildings are responsible for almost 50 percent of the greenhouse gasses emitted and consume over 75 percent of the total electricity generated in the United States.

It stands to reason, then, that we should focus as much - if not more - energy on creating homes that are greener, and make use of sustainable materials.

Carlton Architecture's designs make beauty and usefulness out of natural materials like stone, brick, and timber. Utilizing the services of local artisans ensures that the local economy benefits as well.

Carlton Architecture is proud of the beautiful, warm and green custom residences they have created. To learn more, visit their web site: http://www.carltonarchitecture.com

McCain, Obama and Alternative Energy to Dominate Fuel Cell Seminar & Exposition

Prestigious event in McCain’s home state a week before the election to connect leading scientists, researchers, buyers and manufacturers with energy consumers

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Views of John McCain and Barack Obama on fuel cells as alternative energy (source: Fuel Cells 2000) to help mitigate the effects of global warming will capture attention during the 32nd Fuel Cell Seminar & Exposition, October 27-30 at the Phoenix Convention Center, Phoenix.

Some 2,000 scientists, researchers, business buyers, manufacturers and interested consumers are expected to attend the annual event. The FCS&E is one of the world’s largest gatherings focusing on current and potential uses of fuel cells such as hydrogen-powered cars, buses, motorcycles, industrial forklifts, emergency equipment, providing power in remote locations and future residential applications.

Valerie Browning, ValTech Solutions, LLC, and 2008 technical program chair says “Energy and the economy dominate the discussion right now. With the election coming only a week after our event, it’s important that our attendees understand and discuss positions of the two major candidates for president on alternative energy including fuel cells.” According to Browning, FCS&E planners anticipate animated discussions in Senator McCain’s home state on his views and those of Senator Obama on wider use of smart fuel cell applications. (source: Fuel Cells 2000).

Open to Buyers, Interested Consumers

Fuel Cells for a Greener World is the conference theme and it includes sessions drawing international participation. The FCS&E will feature technical presentations on worldwide fuel cell development and encourage dialogue among participants on the growing variety of fuel cells currently on the market. Interested consumers can visit the convention, register and gain free admission to the exhibit hall. The Exposition offers three events open to all attendees:

* “Ride & Drive” where licensed motorists on October 29-30 can take the wheel and test drive the latest examples of environmentally friendly vehicles powered by fuel cells. At Ride & Drive, sponsored in part by the California Fuel Cell Partnership, drivers will be able to see, touch and feel how green energy is being used in transportation applications. Featured vehicles include Daimler F-Cell, Chevy Equinox, Honda Clarity, Toyota FCHV and the Hyundai Tucson. A test drive course will be located outside the convention center. Registered participants also can speak with representatives from car manufacturers to learn more about current uses and the next generation of products.

* “Demo World” where attendees can get a first-hand look at how fuel cells are being used every day in homes and by businesses. Demonstrations will be provided by participating exhibitors.

* “Educators Day” on Wednesday, October 29, where Arizona’s elementary and high school teachers along with college and vocational instructors are invited to attend the FSC&E to learn about current and potential fuel cell applications.

“This year’s gathering has an ever-increasing focus on education and outreach to the general public and the fuel cell end user community,” adds Browning. “Talk is being replaced by action and exciting uses. Our educational sessions will show how fuel cells are an environmentally friendly energy source. Exhibit hall demonstrations will focus on how fuel cells are an environmentally responsible solution to meet the worldwide demand for clean energy. The time has never been better for consumers and businesses to invest in and accelerate fuel cell applications worldwide.”

The Fuel Cell Seminar & Exposition is the largest technical conference of its kind. The conference attracts over 2,000 attendees annually and offers the largest number of technical papers, the most exhibits and the best coverage of the latest technical advances and research in the field. International participants include technical leaders, scientists, educators, researchers, developers, inventors, students and manufacturers of fuel cell products. Technical sessions focus in four main areas: utility, residential, vehicle and portable. Challenges in costs, fuels, storage, reliability, lifetime and adoptability are also covered. FCS&E attendees, sponsors and exhibitors represent the latest in leading research and development--both domestically and abroad. The 2008 FCS&E is continuing its mission to educate and inform not only conference attendees but also interested consumers on fuel cell-related technical and commercial developments.

IT Managers Who Aim to Save Money Also End Up Saving the Environment

Logicalis Survey Finds IT Managers Are Accidental Environmentalists as 86% Are More Likely To Make Decisions To Save Money Than the Environment

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) September 22, 2008 -- A recent survey performed by Logicalis (www.us.logicalis.com), a global provider of high-performance technology, revealed that 86% of IT managers are more likely to make decisions to save money than to benefit the environment. Fortunately for Mother Nature, the survey also revealed that the steps companies are taking to trim IT budgets are also making their data centers more environmentally sustainable.

Today's tight economy makes some IT managers reluctant to embrace the green cause. They are more motivated to save money than to invest in sustainability. According to the survey, however, IT managers are saving the environment in the course of those actions by reducing power use, and making better use of existing servers in the data center. Nearly 88% of respondents have already, or have plans to use virtualization technologies in their data centers in the next 12 months. In addition, about 85% of respondents have already, or have plans to consolidate and reduce the number of servers in their data centers in the next year.

"These are tough economic times for many companies, and IT managers are under pressure to reduce costs," said Eric Linxweiler, Senior Vice President of Solution Services at Logicalis. "Recent industry reports predict that IT spending growth will drop and that pricing pressure on vendors will worsen. At Logicalis we are seeing more and more smart IT managers saving money now by using the resources they have more effectively."

Some money-saving and green practices for the data center are more established than others. According to IDC, for instance, server virtualization is now considered a mainstream technology among IT buyers. Virtualized environments allow workloads to be transferred to a smaller number of servers when possible so the unused servers can be powered down, saving money and reducing the servers' environmental impact. Nearly 88% of the IT managers surveyed by Logicalis say they have plans to employ virtualization technologies in their data centers within the next 12 months, if they haven't already done so.

Companies are also saving money and the environment by eliminating or redeploying underutilized data center servers and storage devices. Some recent estimates indicate that almost a third of servers deployed today are doing almost nothing except consuming energy. Improved technologies are allowing data centers to use less physical space to do more work, cutting down on the number, and environmental impact, of data centers. The Logicalis survey showed that 30% of respondents had eliminated or redeployed more than 25% of the servers in their data centers. About 18% had eliminated or redeployed more than a quarter of the storage devices in their data centers.

As an indication of the cost and environmental benefits of server consolidation, one Logicalis client saw power cost savings of $82,216 in the first year. A ten-year projection, assuming a sustained pattern of data center growth, would yield a $1,320,197 power cost savings. This is equivalent to 29,487 barrels of oil saved over a ten-year period, or 21,573,949 pounds of CO2 emissions reduced over a ten year period.

Cooling is one of the largest energy drains associated with the data center. There are numerous techniques for upgrading the data center cooling system, a practice that the survey found only a third of the respondents had performed or planned to perform within the next 12 months. Employing techniques that increase the effectiveness of cooling systems can save companies money in power costs and loads of carbon emissions.

Worldwide, IT produces 600 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year; the same as the annual CO2 output from almost 320 million small cars. According to IDC, one-third of customers already consider it "important" to "very important" that IT suppliers have green offerings. As more and more businesses are discovering, however, employing green practices and reducing costs in the data center are not mutually exclusive. Logicalis is helping businesses learn how they can save money through practices such as virtualization, consolidation and other practices that reduce environmental impact and carbon outputs.

Logicalis recently published a feature story including more information about green IT practices and how they can be implemented for companies that want to save some money, available for download at www.us.logicalis.com/greenit. The company also offers an online IT Carbon & Power Consumption Calculator, at http://www.us.logicalis.com/green to help companies gauge the potential benefits of various data center strategies.

The Undercover Baby (Registered Trademark) offers new moms a fashionable, eco-friendly accessory to breastfeed in public.

Concord, CA (PRWEB) September 22, 2008 -- The Undercover Baby (Registered Trademark) is launching a new line of stylish, eco-friendly breastfeeding accessories. The collection features 100% cotton & 100% organic cotton nursing covers for the breastfeeding mom, and is available at http://www.theundercoverbaby.com. Two stay-at-home moms established the partnership company to give nursing mothers the privacy to nurse in public with an eco-friendly cover-up.

"The main differences between The Undercover Baby nursing covers and others already out in the market are the stylish, durable design and the organic cotton print choices, which are unlike most solid color options available today," said Jenette Magallanes, General Partner of The Undercover Baby. "So many moms today prefer a 'green' choice because they want a safe, natural, and low environmental impact product for their babies. This product meets this demand without sacrificing style."

The nursing cover features include print fabric with double stitching, peep viewing capability, and a buckle accessory. It is designed much like an apron, so that the cover won't fall off while a mother is nursing. The peep-viewing feature allows a nursing mother to view her baby while breastfeeding by forming a flexible arch at the neckline of the cover. This also allows for airflow. The nursing covers can also be used to shield a baby while in a baby carrier.

The Undercover Baby nursing covers feature a soft, high-quality sateen cotton fabric. The organic cotton print fabrics are certified and conform to the Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS). Most of the prints are floral and have a nature-inspired theme. The printing is done using low environmental impact inks and dyes that comply with the GOTS. For more features, see http://www.theundercoverbaby.com/html/features.html.

Pricing & Availability
100% cotton nursing covers will retail for $36 and 100% organic cotton nursing covers will retail for $42. Currently all nursing covers are available for purchase online at http://www.theundercoverbaby.com/shop.html.

Sutus Business Central Surges ahead with Green Office Technology

Award-winning VoIP office-in-a-box product helps small businesses reduce carbon footprint

Vancouver, B.C. (PRWEB) September 11, 2008 -- The Sutus Business Central™, a multi-service business gateway (MSBG) that provides Small Businesses with a fully integrated data, networking and telephony solution today has released its findings related to the energy savings of it's small business technology. In addition to its business operational features, the power consumption, design and advanced remote support of Business Central dramatically reduces a small business' carbon footprint compared to a piecemeal solution that provides equivalent business functionality.
News Image

In the course of a year, the Business Central requires 350 kw/hrs power*. This is 1261 kw/hr lower than the power usage of the combined products used by most small businesses to match the functionality of the Business Central. The power difference is equivalent to .98 metric tonnes of CO2 tonnes per year. That's the equivalent of parking the car for 60 days a year or replacing a twenty year old fridge with an 'energy saver' model

As well as having low power requirements, the Business Central enjoys a very streamlined design with dimensions of 9'' by 11'' by 4''. This is little bigger than a Microsoft Xbox and is considerably smaller than the combined dimensions of a competing piecemeal solution. In addition, advanced remote support and management features built into the Business Central mean that the device can be remotely monitored, upgraded and repaired without the need to send out a technician or for the small business staff member to spend long periods on the phone.

The Sutus Business Central (tm) has been developed specifically for businesses of up to 25 employees and comprises a wide array of advanced data and networking functions such as: file server, email server, router, firewall, wireless access point, VPN remote access server, automated backups, and a business-class phone system with the ability to simultaneously support both standard phone line and VoIP connections.

The Business Central is also a gateway for hosted services and is ideal for businesses that promote remote working or those with employees in numerous locations.

Shawn Chute, EVP of Sutus, commented, 'People are rapidly becoming more conscious of their effect on the environment and this is starting to show in some of their business decisions. Small business owners in particular have the advantage of being able to change the way their company operates in many ways according to their preferences. The Sutus Business Central enables them to improve business functionality while helping the environment by utilizing our "all-in-one" energy efficient complete office solution..'

*Assumes constant power 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

Setcom Corporation Goes Green

Efforts made by Setcom to become a more environmentally friendly company.

Mountain View, CA, September 08, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Setcom Corporation (www.SetcomCorp.com), an industry leader in communications systems and accessories for police motorcycles, fire apparatus, and other public safety and military vehicles, is adopting new methods in an attempt to make the company more environmentally friendly. These changes will allow Setcom to become a more environmentally sound company.

One of the most important changes Setcom is making is in reducing the amount of paper flow throughout the company. All of the company waste paper is now recycled. Setcom relies heavily on the use of its ERP system and email to help limit the amount of paper used on a daily basis. They have also incorporated scanning and electronic file keeping which has resulted in a 90% reduction of their use of filing cabinets.

In addition to cutting its daily use of paper, Setcom is also incorporating electronic marketing methods to further decrease their paper usage. The majority of the marketing and advertising done by Setcom today is via electronic means. Setcom is making an effort to distribute their company information on a CD or USB drive whenever possible. Setcom is also in the process of putting all of its marketing material online on their company website. Mailers and paper-based media advertising have not been completely eliminated since some customers still prefer paper brochures but marketing through paper products is a very small part of the total Setcom marketing effort.

Another way Setcom is becoming more environmentally friendly is by reducing its overall power consumption. The Setcom building was remodeled to provide more open space that utilizes natural light. Lighting and HVAC have also been removed from areas in the building where it is not necessary. All non-essential equipment in the company is turned off every night. Setcom has also installed more sophisticated thermostats and more efficient water heaters to better utilize power consumption.

Waste paper is not the only recycled item at Setcom. Old electronic gear and computers that are no longer used by the company are recycled and replaced with more energy efficient items. The company also makes it a point to use economical cars when employees are travelling.

Despite the advances Setcom is making in its quest to become environmentally sound, there are areas where they would like to improve. One of these areas is RoHS compliance. RoHS compliance calls for restricting the use of six hazardous materials in manufacturing various electronic components. The materials are lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybiominated biphenyls, and polybiominated diphenl ether. Many of the vendors Setcom works with are already RoHS compliant but the company wants to work with all of its vendors to gain complete RoHS compliance.

Kettle Foods Saves Green with Gold

Company Marks One-Year Anniversary of LEED® Gold Potato Chip Factory with Savings

SALEM, Ore. & BELOIT, Wis.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--One year after the grand opening of America’s first LEED® Gold certified food manufacturing plant, Kettle Foods is seeing the green in building green.

“When we decided to go for green, or in this case gold, with LEED® certification of our new factory, we knew it was the right thing to do,” said Tim Fallon, Kettle Foods president, North America. “The bonus is that making our Kettle Brand™ Potato Chips in a more environmentally friendly way is also proving to be good business.”

The factory, which produces thousands of bags of the company’s Kettle Brand™ Potato Chips for shipment to the East Coast, began production on May 9, 2007. In line with initial energy- and water-saving estimates, the Beloit, Wis., facility is yielding both environmental and economic benefits, including:

* Annual energy savings (gas and electric) of 20 percent, translating to an estimated cost reduction of $110,000 on natural gas and $51,000 on electricity.
* Annual water savings of $34,000 due to reclamation systems capturing and reusing 3.4 million gallons of water.
* Monthly recycling of 2,300 gallons of waste oil with conversion to biodiesel, an alternative fuel used to power a company fleet of diesel-engine cars called BioBeetles.
* Annual reduction of more than 3 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions resulting from the elimination of shipping lines between Oregon and the Midwest.

As part of the company’s overarching commitment to limiting its impact on the environment wherever possible, Kettle Foods offsets 100 percent of the electricity used to operate both its Salem and Beloit factories with renewable wind power. Additionally, the Beloit plant is home to 18 wind turbines. Mounted on the roof, the swiveling turbines are on track to meet estimated annual electricity generation, enough to make 56,000 bags of Kettle Brand™ Potato Chips every year.

In addition to resource savings, the company is partnering with Tallgrass Restoration, LLC, to return the factory’s five-acre backyard to its native prairie state. After being planted last spring, it’s currently in the first phase of regrowth and restoration. Though it will take more than a year to nurture the land back to its native state, it’s already showing signs of renewal, including the return of wildflowers, birds and small prairie animals. The next phase of restoration includes a controlled burn, a natural process that allows the diversity of the natural landscape to emerge and thrive.

Going "Green" Can be Expensive But it Doesn't Have to be

Buying expensive eco-friendly products have just become cheaper as online coupon website, Shopaneer, launches "green" category featuring coupons for environmentally friendly products and stores.

Richmond Hill, ON (PRWEB) September 17, 2008 -- Buying expensive eco-friendly products have just become cheaper as online coupon website, Shopaneer.com, launches "green" category featuring coupons for environmentally friendly products and stores. "Everyone wants to do their part to help save the environment, whether it is buying a human-powered lawnmower, solar panels for their house, electric powered car, or other recycled and eco-friendly products. The only problem is that buying these products can be expensive," said Shopaneer owner Scott Rezka. "Our new "green" category will help alleviate some of these costs as well as allow stores to promote their eco-friendly products."

Along with the launch of the "green" category, Shopaneer has put together a list of ways to save money while purchasing environmentally friendly products.

Use Coupons
The easiest way to save money is to use online coupons for your eco-friendly products. What is easier than clicking a link and saving 10% off? Online coupons also have the extra benefit of not wasting any paper.

Buy in Bulk
Another way to simultaneously save money and go green is to buy items that you use often in bulk. These items may include food, drinks, and cleaning products. There are many benefits to buying in bulk as you are purchasing the same items you would regularly buy for less, the items last longer, and you reduce waste as there is less packaging.

Shop Around
If you are buying larger items, such as a push lawnmower or solar panels, your best bet to save money is to shop around. Check your local newspaper for flyers and price check online to find the best deal. Do a search for price comparison and you will find hundreds of websites. All you need to do is type the name of the product and these sites will help you find the lowest price. Often, you can get stores to match or beat their competitor's prices simply by asking.

Eco Tax Credits

Enterprise Offers “Green” Driving Tips to Help Motorists Reduce Fuel Use, Improve Efficiency

Smarter Driving Can Help Save Money, Reduce Environmental Impact

ST. LOUIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As motorists across the country struggle with $4 per gallon gasoline costs and search for ways they can reduce their impact on the environment, Enterprise Rent-A-Car is offering 10 Keys to Green Driving useful tips that drivers can use to cut down on fuel use and save money.

When it comes to improving fuel economy and reducing our impact on the environment, every little bit helps, said Steve Short, Vice President, Leisure Business Development. As we look for ways that we as individuals can make a difference, smarter driving is one step we can all take.

Common energy and non-energy related defects discovered in a maintenance inspection include: compromised roof surfaces; improper ventilation; faulty electrical wiring; inadequate heating and cooling capacity for the structure; and substandard windows.

"Maintenance inspections give the homeowners the information they need to make smart investments," stated Golubski. The average person doesn't have the trained eye to identify these issues resulting in prolonged home inefficiency, or significant damage when the system or component actually fails."

The Alliance to Save Energy recommends homeowners take the following measures to help reduce energy costs:

1. Cook with your microwave. It uses 2/3 less energy than your stove.
2. Use your dishwasher (wait for a full load). It uses less water than washing dishes by hand.
3. Keep your fridge full. It keeps it from warming up too fast when the door is open.
4. Turn up your thermostat, and turn off the AC when you aren't home. You save 1-3% per degree for each degree the thermostat is set above 72 degrees.
5. Use cold or warm water when washing clothes, and always rinse in cold water.
6. Line dry clothes whenever possible, but only run the dryer with full loads.
7. Turn off appliances, lights and equipment when not in use.
8. Unplug electronic devices when not in use, as many use electricity even when switched off.
9. Replace AC filters monthly.
10. Weather strip, seal and caulk leaky doors and windows.
11. Use fans instead of AC units. They use less energy.
12. Replace old appliances with new and more energy efficient appliances.

Enterprise along with sister companies National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car owns the worlds largest fleet of fuel-efficient vehicles. More than 440,000 cars in the combined fleet of approximately 1.1 million vehicles average a highway fuel efficiency rating of at least 28 mpg or better, and more than 237,000 average 32 mpg or better.

Enterprise, National and Alamo also operate the worlds largest fleet of FlexFuel vehicles more than 73,000 cars and trucks that have the ability to use E85, a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline and approximately 4,000 gas/electric hybrid vehicles. The companies also offer the industrys largest consumer carbon offset program, which enables customers to offset the CO2 emissions associated with renting a car.

With the environment in mind, Enterprise offers motorists the following driving tips:

1. Lighten your load: The more weight a car carries, the lower its fuel economy will be. On road trips, while its tempting to pack everything kitchen sink included its smart to leave heavy, unnecessary items behind. And, even for your day-to-day travel, take a few minutes to clean out your car to eliminate extra weight. Pack only what you need (including emergency items) for vacations, and remove unneeded items from your back seat and trunk. These simple steps can cut significant weight, enabling your car to use less fuel.

2. Reduce your speed and keep the RPMs down: As speed increases, so does drag. So, driving at higher speeds will reduce your fuel economy. In fact, for every 10 miles per hour you reduce speed, you improve your fuel economy by 4 mpg. In addition, avoid putting the pedal to the metal when the stoplight turns green, which increases your vehicles RPM level and lowers your fuel efficiency. For automatic transmission vehicles, accelerating gently prompts automatic gear shifting at lower engine speeds; with a manual transmission, the general rule is to shift gears between 2,000 and 2,500 RPM. Staying at or a bit below the speed limit and watching your RPMs can have a big impact on the environment and your bank account.

3. Plan routes in advance and combine trips: Whether gearing up for a weeklong vacation or a quick trip to the mall, plan out your route in advance to avoid heavy traffic times and areas. Sometimes, the shortest route can consume more fuel than a longer one, if rush hour or road construction leads to traffic jams and stop-and-go driving. And, warmed-up engines produce lower emissions, so try to combine several short trips into one to save fuel and cut down on pollution. Try to anticipate your errands and plan to knock them all out in one day, if not one stop.

4. Buy for the need; rent for the exception: Whether you are planning to rent or purchase a new vehicle, why choose more car than you need? More fuel efficient vehicles burn less fuel, which means less pollution. Research the fuel economy of various makes and models, including hybrids, and find the most environmentally friendly vehicle that fits your needs. And, for those occasions when your day-to-day vehicle wont fit the bill, its easy to rent something that will. (With more than 6,000 neighborhood locations, Enterprise is within 15 miles of 90 percent of the U.S. population, and has a wide selection of vehicles from minivans to sport utilities to trucks.) Whether buying or renting, focus on what you need.

5. Use the right fuel: Most cars dont need premium fuel although some vehicles do call for higher octane gas to maximize performance and fuel efficiency. Check your owners manual when choosing what grade of gasoline to use, and dont spend the extra money on a premium grade if you dont need to. If you have a FlexFuel vehicle, which is able to use E85 fuel (a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline), take a minute to locate E85 fueling stations near you by visiting www.e85refueling.com. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, using E85 can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20 percent.

6. Avoid the top off: Drivers often top off their tank beyond the gas pumps automatic cutoff point to get an even total or to squeeze in as much fuel as possible. But that extra squeeze can lead to spills and release gas vapors into the air. This wastes money and pollutes the air, even aggravating smog in bigger cities.

7. Carpool: Why have two or more cars on the road when one can get the job done? Set up a carpool group with several colleagues at work, or coordinate with family and friends to carpool for regular errands such as grocery shopping. Fewer vehicles on the road mean fewer pollutants in the air.

8. Keep tires properly inflated: Maintaining proper tire inflation levels can improve fuel economy. Tires lose air pressure over time and due to cold temperatures. As that air pressure decreases, rolling resistance increases, making your vehicle less fuel efficient. Your vehicles owners manual will show you the proper inflation levels.

9. Give the brake a break: Even after planning ahead, you may find yourself stuck in a traffic jam. When you do, be smart as you navigate your way through it. Avoid jack-rabbit starts and keep your acceleration moderate and steady, because cars use the most gas when they accelerate. Create space from the car in front of you, and look ahead for any potential slowdowns so you can ease off the gas rather than slam on the brake.

10. Cool off wisely: A common mistake drivers make is kicking off the air conditioning and rolling down their windows to save gas, regardless of circumstance. It is true that rolling down the windows in lieu of the AC can increase fuel economy at slower speeds, but at faster highway speeds, open windows can actually increase drag and hurt fuel economy. So, consider the weather and your speed before deciding how to stay cool on the go.

High Energy Costs Predicted to Increase Further Through 2008

Energy-saving tips to cool down without heating up the budget.

Independence, OH (PRWEB) August 18, 2008 -- The United States Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates the average family will spend $2,350 on energy at home and $3,950 on gas for cars or trucks, totaling $6,300 per household in 2008. With rising gas prices, higher utilities and overall energy costs at an all-time high, Americans are struggling to manage their budgets.

"People typically only think of a home inspection when they are either buying or selling," states Kylene Golubski, VP Business Planning & Development for Inspect-It Property Inspection. "We can also help homeowners protect their home investment on an ongoing basis and potentially help decrease energy bills through annual maintenance inspections and home energy audits. You go to the doctor for a check-up, get tune-ups for your car, but what are you doing to maintain your largest investment? The old adage applies: 'An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.'"

Common energy and non-energy related defects discovered in a maintenance inspection include: compromised roof surfaces; improper ventilation; faulty electrical wiring; inadequate heating and cooling capacity for the structure; and substandard windows.

Power shortage everywhere

I'm always online with my colleague in head office, Mumbai, India, using messenger so we can cut phone cost.
She told me that yesterday office was having power shortage the whole day, but they have power generator so problem can be minimized.
Just now, I chat with her again. I asked whether power was back. She said it's fine, tomorrow they will have another shut down. Every Friday for industrial area. But.... for residential area: 3-8 hours everyday!

That is such a difficult life! I thought only Indonesia has the problem, but it's happening globally.
In my hometown, Medan, electricity company shuts down power everyday, for 2-3 hours.
In Jakarta area, we have some schedule of power shut down too, but it was never long!

In other remote areas, situation is worse, making households buy power generator.
Petrol price gone up, and rare to find.

The Top Five Ways to Save Money and The Planet

Source: Green Baby Guide

Since fuel expenses, high food prices, and child-rearing costs are eating into our thrifty budgets, here are some simple, eco-friendly tips that can save some money. They all come directly from stopglobalwarming.org, which has another five money saving tips available for your perusal. While you’re there, use their handy-dandy online calculator to estimate your carbon and cost savings.

Run your dishwasher only when it’s loaded to full capacity. It’ll save you $40 per year and reduce your carbon emissions by a whopping 200 pounds.

Move your thermostat down two degrees when it’s cold and up two degrees when it’s hot. This minor switch will save your family $98 annually and bring your carbon emissions down by two thousand pounds!

Take shorter showers. Check out Crunchy Domestic Goddess’s post on this. She recently challenged her readers to time their showers and try to keep them to just five minutes per shower. This really isn’t that challenging! By reducing your showering time you could save 350 pounds of carbon dioxide and $99 per year.

Switch just three standard light bulbs in a highly used area of your home with compact fluorescent bulbs. You’ll save $60 per year (and remember that they last for many, many years) and 300 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.

If you have a car, make sure the tires are properly inflated by checking them regularly. You’ll save a shocking $840 and 250 pounds of carbon dioxide.

Choosing your beauty products

Yes, this is important as we have already been surrounded by pollution, so we need to choose our beauty products carefully, especially when you have skin allergy or sensitive skin. Don't forget, it also helps us reduce damage to environment.

If you want to go green with your beauty products, The Green Machine has tips for you:

1. Avoid products with artificial fragrances
For the past 50 years, 80-90% of fragrances found in beauty products have been synthesized from petroleum—not from natural sources, as some labels might lead you to believe. Beauty product labels can be confusing—or worse, misleading—because the Food and Drug Administration does not regulate how companies use words like "fragrance-free," "unscented," "natural" and "hypoallergenic." Look for products that include natural fragrances in their ingredients, or no fragrance at all. Your best bet is to choose products from trusted cosmetic and body-care companies that use only natural, certified organic, non-toxic and non-synthetic ingredients.

2. Knows what in your potions and lotions
Be on the lookout for hazardous ingredients in your medicine cabinet and makeup bag. Cosmetic ingredients are not regulated by the FDA or any other government agency and often contain harmful ingredients that have not been adequately tested. For example, parabens are synthetic preservatives that can disrupt hormones but can still be found in many of our beauty products. Check the ingredient lists on your moisturizers, soaps, bath products, makeup, sunscreen, toothpaste and deodorant, and replace anything that includes any of the following ingredients:

Denali National Park Goes Greener With New Hybrid Commercial Bus From IC Bus

IC Bus to Deliver the Park's First-Ever Hybrid Bus

DENALI, Alaska, July 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Visitors to Alaska's Denali National Park and Preserve, one of the largest protected intact ecosystems in the world, will now have the opportunity to explore the park with the aid of an environmentally friendly vehicle -- a fuel-efficient and emissions-reducing hybrid bus. IC Bus, North America's largest school bus and commercial bus manufacturer, is delivering the Park's first hybrid bus on July 17.

Assigned for use as part of the park's shuttle service which extends 90 miles into the wilderness, the hybrid bus will transport visitors along a 45- mile route through August 30, during the Park's peak season, enhancing visitors' experience. A quieter engine will improve wildlife viewing as visitors see and hear nature in a way the other buses do not allow.

"Can you imagine the thrill of moving slowly and silently past a bear nursing its cub or wolf hunting along the road?" asked Elwood Lynn, assistant superintendent of operations for Denali.

In addition to a quieter ride, the new bus will provide better performance on the steep grades of the park road as Denali is also known for its mountain viewing.

Most importantly, the CE Series Hybrid delivers the following environmental benefits:

-- Up to 30 percent reduction in particulate matter

-- Up to 20 percent reduction in NOx emissions

-- Up to 70 percent improvement in fuel economy

-- Up to 40 percent reduction in CO2

-- Hybrid drive power provides an electronic boost for hills or when rapid

acceleration is needed

-- Electronic regeneration recharges the battery and improves brake life

Denali officials and employees are very excited about the new hybrid as they are committed to making Park operations more sustainable and educating visitors about eco-friendly changes they can make in their own lives.

"This bus will reduce our impact on the environment while improving guests' experience," explained Lynn.

When Doyon/ARAMARK, the concessioner responsible for the Park's transportation service, won the Denali contract in 2003, the Park challenged them to explore new bus technology, including hybrid. In turn, Doyon/ARAMARK approached Cascadia International, the IC Bus dealership in Anchorage. Cascadia is loaning the hybrid bus to Doyon/ARAMARK to test at the Park.

"This bus is for demo and evaluation purposes. The National Park Service is looking at this technology and is very interested in the feasibility and economic viability of future fleet replacements. The price of diesel fuel in the Denali area tops $5.00/gallon so fuel economy is a genuine consideration with this project along with reducing environmental impact," said Matt Gerber, statewide sales executive of Cascadia International, LLC.

Doyon/ARAMARK currently has 110 buses in its Denali National Park and Preserve fleet which drive an average of 1.2 million miles per year. As more of the diesel-engine buses are replaced by hybrids, the reduced impact on the environment and fuel savings become that much greater.

"Improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions will help the Park and the environment," said John McKinney, vice president and general manager of IC Bus. "IC Bus is committed to environmental leadership with its hybrid commercial bus."

The hybrid system, developed by Enova Systems, couples a diesel engine with an 80-kilowatt powertrain, incorporating a transmission, batteries and an electric motor. The system recovers kinetic energy during regenerative braking, charging the batteries while the bus is slowing down. This provides additional power for acceleration, making the hybrid buses ideal because of the frequent starting and stopping of the bus.

IC Bus

IC Bus, LLC of Warrenville, Ill., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Navistar International Corporation (NYSE: NAV). The nation's largest manufacturer of school buses, IC Bus is a leader in passenger protection, chassis design, engines and ergonomics. The company is also a producer of school buses. All IC Bus buses are sold, serviced and supported through a renowned dealer network that offers an integrated customer program encompassing parts, training and service. According to the 2007 GfK Roper Green Gauge® Study, about 40% of Americans say they’d pay for a product that is perceived as being better for the environment. But at the same time, 74% of those surveyed say eco-friendly products are too expensive. “Basic laws of supply and demand should eventually bring down the price of eco-friendly products and services,” notes Karen Schiff, co-founder of Ecobunga! “In the meantime, we want to help shoppers chip away at the cost of going green by connecting them to deals large and small.”

At Ecobunga! shoppers can find discounts, free shipping, contests, sweepstakes, and more on all sorts of green products and services. Eco-conscious moms might be interested in Under the Nile’s sale on organic cotton baby clothes, homeowners looking for lower electric bills might want to enter GE’s Energy Smart Sweepstakes, and young and old alike might enjoy the coupons on Stonyfield Farm’s organic frozen yogurt.

Consumers are not the only ones to benefit from Ecobunga! Businesses with earth-friendly offerings can add their deals to the site for free. “We not only want to help shoppers locate green deals, we also want to help green companies locate shoppers,” says Schiff, who explains that before being published to the website each deal is reviewed using criteria recommended by respected organizations, such as Co-op America, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and Consumer Reports. “It’s not a perfect science,” Schiff adds, “but we do our very best to ensure shoppers get a genuine green deal.”
